Caption Your Kaltura Videos
All video and audio files must have closed captions, according to federal regulations. Luckily, we have a simple, fast solution to get approved captions on your media. The process below is for general use. If you have a student in your class with a documented accommodation/need for closed captions, please contact Online Learning so we can help expedite the captioning of your materials.
How to Add Captions to Videos and Audio Files in Kaltura
- Create your media (either a video or audio recording)
- If recording a new video using Kaltura Capture, Save and Upload when finished. For an existing video file not recorded using Kaltura Capture, Upload to Kaltura
- Once the uploaded video is processed, visit the media page and scroll below the media preview. Click Actions -> Captions and Enrich.
- On the next page, you can see any existing requests or completed captions. If there are no requests or captions, click Order.
- The settings on the Order Captions and Enrichment Services page should be Machine, English, Captions for most situations. If this is correct, click Submit.
- Captions will automatically be added to your video once they are done. This can take as little as ten minutes, or as long as a few hours.
Please keep in mind if you edit your video
after captions are made, captions may need to be updated.
What to do if You Find Errors in Captions
The Machine-based caption service can include errors, especially when a speaker is not clear or when jargon or specialized terminology is used. If your captions include simple
word-level errors, click the
How to Edit Captions tab at the top of this page for directions.
How to Request Captions for a Student with an Accommodation
If you have a student in your class with a documented accommodation/need for closed captions, please contact Online Learning so we can help expedite the professional captioning of your materials. The Machine-based captioning process described above may not be sufficient in this case.
Edit Closed Captions in Kaltura Videos
Once you have added closed captions to your Kaltura videos and audio files, you might see word-level errors in the caption text. Here is how to quickly fix minor errors, such as wrong words, contractions, etc. Your video needs to first be uploaded to Kaltura, already have captions, and be a video you own or have access to edit.
How to Make MINOR Edits to Closed Captions
- Open the media page for the Kaltura video you wish to edit
- Below the video preview, click Actions, then Captions and Enrich
- When the list of captions appears, click the pencil icon for the captions you want to edit. (You may only have one set of captions, and if they need editing, they are likely the Machine captions. If you have more than one set of captions, ask OL which ones to edit.)
- Scroll down in the captions or use the search feature to find the incorrect word(s). (#1 in the image)
- When you hover your mouse over the caption text, the field becomes editable. Click your cursor into the text and make your correction(s). (#3 in the image)
- DO NOT add any text to your captions that are not spoken in your video.
- Captions MUST be an accurate reflection of what is said in the video.
- DO NOT edit the times in the far left column (#4 in the image)
- Click Save on the right side of the screen.
